A Prayer for the Political Pessimist
Words to pray when political regimes continue to disappoint
King of Kings,
We are despondent at the present state of affairs.
Too often, the markers of a new regime have been deception, corruption, and power plays at the expense of the marginalized.
Even as we seek to participate in democratic governments, our votes are suppressed , we are fed misinformation, and given up on in the end.
Politicians take your Name to bless unjust acts, and even claim that they are “protecting” you.
They make alliances, treaties, and promises in terms of what is politically expedient and quickly renounce them as soon as it is good for them.
Too many of our leaders walk in the ways of Pontius Pilate, arguing “What is truth?” instead of recognizing the Truth standing in front of them.
Those without recourse are exploited and denied what is their’s.
Even during times of global crisis, human lives are treated as dispensable bargaining chips.
Lord, help us to remain emotionally engaged in the struggles of our communities while still having the hope of your Kingdom blazing in our hearts.
Help us not to renounce goodness even in the face of those who continue to do evil.
Give us the words to speak as we ought, with courage and integrity, in the present time.
Strengthen our hearts, as we are constantly given over to high hopes but often brought back down to the lowest of valleys.
Help us live in the reality of your Kingdom that is present but not yet fully realized.
To the only Lord Jesus Christ, whose kingdom will never end, together with the Father and Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.
